Members of The Elders gathered in Paris at a celebration Dec. 6 to mark the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and to honor the 30 international winners of the Internews-sponsored 'Every Human Has Rights' Media Awards.
The Elders-inspired Every Human Has Rights campaign reintroduced the Universal Declaration to millions of people around the world and united them in upholding the values that bind our human family.
In 1948 the newly formed United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; a global statement based on values of freedom, equality, dignity, tolerance, respect and shared responsibility.
The principles contained in the Universal Declaration are as important today as they were in 1948. Our world is still marked by inequality and division. Genocide is occurring again in Darfur. Discrimination against women and minorities is common. Poverty and exploitation trap billions in lives of despair.
