Muhammad Yunus steps down

Muhammad Yunus, who joined the Elders in 2007, announces he is stepping down as a member of The Elders but will continue to support the group in any way possible.

Muhammad Yunus, who joined the Elders in 2007, has announced he will step down. Professor Yunus says he will continue to support the group "in any way possible," but regrets that he is unable to do justice to his membership due to the demands of his work.

Professor Yunus is the founder of Grameen Bank which has enabled millions of poor people to receive loans. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.

"I was deeply honoured to have been asked to take part in the Elders initiative. It is that rarest collection of the most respected individuals on the planet who have already made significant impact in the most difficult places in the world. I wish The Elders the very best in their endeavours." - Muhammad Yunus.
