The Elders are recruiting a Policy Advisor, to develop and implement a new programme of work on Access to Justice that reflects The Elders’ vision, mission and values.
This new programme will build on many aspects of The Elders’ previous work, in particular the contribution of Elders to the Commission on Legal Empowerment of the Poor.
The new programme follows approval by the Elders of a new Strategic Plan for the period 2018-22 and the decision to make Access to Justice a major area of work within the new Plan.
The programme on Access to Justice will include a particular focus on addressing violence against women and girls. The Policy Advisor will be responsible for initiating a coherent suite of initiatives, and for helping to define The Elders’ positions and messages on Access to Justice.
We are looking for someone creative and strategic, with a strong background related to access to justice and a wide range of policy contacts in this field. The post-holder must be able to take the lead on proposing initiatives, developing them and leading all aspects of implementation.
We are looking for an experienced, senior policy professional with at least a decade of relevant experience, who is committed to the mission and values of The Elders. The following experience, skills and personal qualities are required.
Knowledge and Experience
- An excellent understanding of a range of legal empowerment and broader access to justice issues, including experience working with governments and other actors on this theme.
- Demonstrated senior-level policy experience related to access to justice in international organisations, government, NGOs or development institutions.
- An excellent network of senior policy and political contacts related to access to justice.
- A track record of developing programme strategy, defining outputs and outcomes, leading implementation of plans and activities, and achieving results on international policy initiatives.
- Experience of collaborating with a range of organisations and high-profile individuals to develop and influence policy.
- Excellent written and spoken English including demonstrated ability to write clear / concise briefing and documents for high-level audiences.
- Relevant graduate or postgraduate qualification.
Skills and Abilities
- Able to think and act strategically to develop practical, innovative and creative initiatives for The Elders, and to lead and manage all relevant aspects of implementation
- Strong diplomatic skills and political acumen.
- Analytical and research strength including the ability to understand, interpret and present complex and sensitive information from a variety of sources in a clear and concise manner.
- People management skills. This post does not include management of staff within The Elders’ secretariat but may include management of one or more specialist consultants working on related areas.
- Able to travel internationally, occasionally at short notice.

- A flexible, collaborative style and willingness to work in a small, collaborative team.
- A high level of personal initiative, adaptive, energetic and resilient.
- A strong personal commitment to the mission and values of The Elders.
